Mobile phone jargon can create a confusing situation when purchasing your new mobile phone.  New advancements in mobile phone technology means that keeping up to date with the terminology is an ongoing process.

Before going in to your local mobile phone store or even visiting your favourite website retailer to buy a new mobile phone, make sure that you have done your research and understand all the lingo you will need to know to get the best phone for your needs.

Here are some of the terms you may need to know when buying a new mobile phone:

•    EMS – Stands for “Enhanced Message Service”, a feature where you can send and receive different types of messages like ring tones, animations and photos.
•    SMS – Stands for “Short Messaging Services” which are more commonly known as text messages or simply, texts.
•    MMS – Stands for “Multimedia Messaging Services” which allows you to send and receive data that deals with multimedia such as sound files, video and photos.
•    Service Provider – this is your carrier that gives you access to their network to make and receive calls and texts. This is the company that will send provide a contract of service and send you bills for service usage.
•    Roaming – this is when your mobile phone leaves its service network area and connects to a “service partner” for you to still be able to use your phone.  Be wary when using your phone on roaming as additional charges, outside of the ones set out in your contract, may apply.
•    WAP – this stands for “Wireless Application Protocol” which will help you to surf the web with your mobile phone.
•    SAR – This is a more technical term that stands for “Specific Absorption Rate” which is the unit used to measure exposure to the radio frequencies.  
•    GSM – Offers secure mobile and data connections that can be accessed all over the world.
•    Fascias – covers for your mobile phone
•    Java – This is a useful technology for people interested in supporting gaming applications, ring tones and logos from the web.
•    Dual Band – This technology allows handsets to work over two frequency bands instead of a single network.
•    GPRS – Means “General Packet Radio Service” which is your constant internet connection.
•    Bluetooth – Your wireless connection for data which can share information with compatible devices like computers and PDAs that also come with Bluetooth connectivity.
•    Phone Tethering – Allows the phone’s data connection to be applied to a laptop for surfing the internet.

The best way to select a mobile phone is to discuss exactly what you want to use your phone for with the sales representative that is helping you.  If you are purchasing your phone through a website retailer and you have questions, be sure to call or email their customer service department.  Asking questions upfront will save you time once you receive your phone and put you in the best position to make the most of features and benefits straight away.
