How To Cast Starcraft 2 Games

Starcraft 2s community is continually growing day in and day out. Already, it’s starting to overtake what Brood War was and it shows no signs what so ever of slowing down. No is the perfect time to embed yourself into the ever growing community, and to make yourself a figurehead of the game, just by using your voice!

Sp, you want to star casting Starcraft 2 games but you’re not quite sure where to begin? It’s actually rather simple, and in this guide, I’ll teach you step by step how you can get started.

Equipment

The main piece of equipment you’ll need to cast Starcraft 2 games is a microphone. Obviously, the better quality microphone you can get your hands on, the better your casting is going to sound. If, however, you’re somewhat strapped for cash, most webcams these days come with an inbuilt microphone. I started my casting career with just a Microsoft webcam that had an inbuilt microphone. The quality isn’t the best, and you might hear some staic or noise in the background, but for what you pay, it’s pretty good.

A large hard drive is also a must. We’ll be using FRAPS (I’ll get to this a little later) to record our videos, and FRAPS files take up quite a large amount of room on your hard drive.

A fast PC. Ideally, you want to record your games while viewing the game in the highest possible graphics settings. This makes viewing for your audience much more pleasant. At the same time, you’ll need a fast PC because you’ll be recording video AND playing a game on it’s highest settings. I suggest, at minimum, a Nvidia GTX250 and an Intel  core i5 CPU.

 

Software

The first piece, and most important piece, of software you’ll need is FRAPS. FRAPS will record exactly what is currently happening on your screen, as well as recording the audio from the game and the audio coming from your microphone. You have a number of options inside FRAPS to increase or decrease quality of the video. I suggest recording in High Definition.If you can’t afford FRAPs, there are a number of free alternatives such as Camtasia.

How to get started

Getting started with your casting career is simple! All you need to do is find some replays (there are quite a few replay websites out there such as sc2replayed.com, sc2rep.com) load up the replay and begin talking!

Now, there are two types of casting. There’s play by play, where you talk about whats going on at the exact moment it happens. For example, someone destroys his opponents army, you could talk about what units killed what, how long it took, the impact on the game it had.

Then you have analysis casting. If you’re new to casting, or to Starcraft 2, I’d suggest staying away from this one. Analysis casting is where you try to predict what may happen later on in the game based on the current actions to players are taking. If you get this wrong however, your credibility can be hurt!

So, load up FRAPS, load up Starcraft 2 and pop on a replay and begin talking and recording! Upload your videos to YouTube and share with your friends!
